Beyond the Desk: Creating the Perfect Breakout Area
Creating a breakout area is more than just setting aside a space away from desks; it’s about fostering an environment where employees can relax, connect, and collaborate. In this blog, we talk through the questions that need to be asked when designing the perfect breakout space.
Creating a breakout area is more than just setting aside a space away from desks; it’s about fostering an environment where employees can relax, connect, and collaborate with their colleagues. A well-thought-out breakout area can become one of the most valuable spaces in any workplace, contributing to employee wellbeing and productivity.
Personally, I love how every space is unique, and often led by the natural character/features of the buildings they’re in. But before you think about adding one to your workspace, there are some important things you need to consider. In this blog, I’ll walk through the key elements of a successful breakout area and the questions I ask myself when designing them for clients.

What’s Its Purpose?
Before diving into the design, you need to clarify the intended purpose of your breakout area. Will it be a space to relax and unwind, a hub for informal meetings, or a spot for collaborative working? Whether it's used for a quick Monday catch up, a team huddle, or simply to reset, defining the use-case of your breakout area will guide every design choice moving forward, from layout to furniture and décor.
Is It Versatile?
To truly serve its purpose, a breakout area should be versatile, catering to different needs and moods throughout the day. Designing a space that can shift to accommodate different activities ensures it’s useful for all employees. This can be achieved by creating zones within the breakout area - think cosy corners with comfortable seating for relaxation, high-top tables for quick stand-ups, or soundproof pods for focused working. A versatile design allows for easy reconfiguration, making the area both practical and dynamic throughout the day.

What Furniture and Finishings?
Furniture is crucial in setting the tone of a breakout area. The furniture used needs to be inviting, practical, and flexible. Soft seating, like plush sofas or cushioned chairs give the space a welcoming feel, while modular furniture offers flexibility for easy rearrangement. Multi-purpose furniture, like items with built-in storage, also maximises space efficiently.
When selecting finishes, consider materials that combine style with functionality. For example, natural finishes like wood and greenery can create a calming, inviting ambiance, while bold colours can inject energy into the space. These choices can transform a simple room into an inviting area that people want to spend time in.

Have clear boundaries been set?
A breakout area should feel distinct from the main workspace. Maintaining that differentiation between the two helps employees mentally disconnect, reinforcing the idea that this space is meant for breaks and informal collaboration, not extended work sessions. Positioning the area away from desks or using different furniture styles, flooring, or colour schemes can help set these boundaries. Subtle signage and guidelines can also remind employees of the intended use without making them feel restricted.
